Here you’ll find our major events for Summer Reading 2024 for Kids & Families. In addition to the events below, we will continue to have out regularly scheduled Story Times at the Downtown, Peaks Island, and Riverton locations.

Summer Community Story Time with Mark from the Portland Fire Department

Location: Downtown Library Audience: Kids & Families Each week this summer, we welcome a different community member for our regular story time! Meet a firefighter, postal worker, doctor, kindergarten teacher, and many more special guests.

Decorate and Stuff a Fish @ Peaks
9:30am - 10:30am
Location: Peaks Island Branch Audience: Teens, Teen Events, Kids & Families There will be a variety of paper fish for you to decorate with crayons and markers. Stuff them with newspaper and you can attach string, take them home or hang them in the library during Summer Reading.

Location: Riverton Branch Audience: Kids & Families Gyotaku is a form of nature printing that can be traced back to the mid-1880s, when Japanese fishermen used it to keep record of their catches!

Location: Downtown Library Audience: Kids & Families New England’s forests and fields, woods, and waters, are all beautiful—but who lives there? During this program with The Center for Wildlife, we’ll explore the ecosystems of New England and meet some of the animals that make their homes here.
