NOOK
eReader devices are available for check-out
You
can check-out a NOOK Simple Touch eReader device to read ebooks
and try out this new reading experience. These devices each have a
number of current best-selling ebooks preloaded on them and they
are available for the usual 3-week loan period with up to two
renewals if there are no holds. Request
a Nook now.
Teen NOOK eReader
devices are also available for check out. These devices, which
are curated by the Portland Public Teen Library Team, come
preloaded with a wide selection of teen books including The
Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins, The Inheritance
Series by Christopher Paolini, and much more. Please visit the
Teen Desk to check out a Teen Nook eReader device.
The
fine print: Limit one device/person. $1/day fee if returned after
due date. Do not add/delete ebooks on the eReader. Please recharge
the device before returning it. To avoid unexpected damage, return
the device to a Lending Desk staffmember directly.
Let
us know what you think! Email us at ebooks@portland.lib.me.us
with your comments about the devices, eBooks in general, or to
make suggestions for other titles you would like us to load onto
these devices.
Popular eBooks are available to download to your own eReader device
Portland Public Library
and 140 other Maine
libraries jointly subscribe to the Overdrive collection of
thousands of popular e-books,
known as the Maine
InfoNet Download Library. Anyone with a library card
from a participating library can access this collection free of charge.
So, grab your library card number and let's get started!
In
addition to the Download Library service, there are many free
ebooks that are available all the time because they are in the
public domain (out of copyright) or otherwise accessible
license-free.

Overdrive
is the current leader in the ebook
lending market. The ebooks available here can be read on Mac or
pc computers using the free Adobe Digital Editions
software, or can be transferred to the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble
Nook, Sony eReader, Borders Kobo, and more (full
guide to compatible devices).
On
iPhones, iPads and
Androids, you can download ebooks directly into an Overdrive
app.
(In addition, you can also transfer
ebooks to an independent app called BlueFire
Reader, with a few more steps.)
Wherever
you read your ebook, it is “due” either 7 or 14 days after
you checked it out from Overdrive, depending on which option you
chose at Check-Out. (In Adobe Digital Editions, the diagonal ribbon across the book cover shows the
remaining check-out days.)
If
you finish with the item sooner than the due date, and you have
been reading on your computer or e-reader device, you can check
it back in to Overdrive early to be eligible to check-out another
e-book (3 items max). Unfortunately, you cannot check-in early
from the Overdrive app on your iPad, iPhone, or Android.
To check-in the
ebook early, go to Adobe Digital
Editions, in the "Book Cover" view of your Library, click once on
the item you want to return to highlight it. Then click the arrow
near the upper left corner of the book cover and choose "Return
Borrowed Item" from the short menu.
Once
you return it from your Adobe library, it is removed from your
computer, but it remains on your e-reader device and you can
continue reading it for the remaining loan period. If, however,
you wait until the ebook expires, the file remains on your reader but becomes unreadable, so you need to choose to
delete it.
Click
for Overdrive's information about how to
download
Library ebooks. We
will also be providing more information soon about other ebooks
available to you via the internet.
