Portland Public Library is the city's cultural center serving 666,000 visitors annually at 4 locations through a unique combination of print, media and digital resources complemented by robust internet access, lectures, classes, exhibits, programs and performances for all ages.

The library serves as the Area Reference & Resource Center (ARRC) for the Southern Maine Library District.

Visit our City of Readers Store for gently-used books, CDs, and more. The Store is located at the Main Library, downstairs next to the art gallery.

Our Mission

Founded in 1867,  the library's mission has been to serve the Greater Portland Community by providing a diverse collection of books and other resources, with access to information resources worldwide. The library's services  support the educational, informational, and recreational interests of all community members.

PPL Planning and Your Involvement

The Library conducts on-going planning exercises including on-line surveys to assist in the development of Library programming and the direction of the Library's planning.

Space Rentals

The Library has 5 meeting rooms and the Rines Auditorium which are available for rental.  For more information, please view our Facilities Usage Agreement, our Rates/Capacities Sheet or call 207-871-1700 x721.  A map of the meeting rooms is available also available.

All four Portland Public Library System locations meet or exceed the standards for accessibility set by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
